Charlotte El Sayed

President

Charlotte is an ST7 trainee in the West Midlands Deanery. Over the past three years, she has been out of programme completing her PhD which was funded by the RCS England and NHS England. Her project assessed training in Robotic Assisted Surgery (RAS) and consequently, she is engaging with national stakeholder groups looking at the implementation and regulation of RAS training. She has a keen interest in education and training which she has demonstrated over the years through her commitment to the Dukes’ Club in delivering several courses and educational events. As president, she is looking to continue to deliver high fidelity courses including robotic courses at both basic and intermediate level; support the delivery of both webinars and face to face events across the colorectal subspecialities and continue to work closely alongside ACPGBI voicing trainees’ concerns.

Ioanna Drami

Vice President

Ioanna is a higher surgical trainee (ST6) in the North East and Central London deanery, with a special interest in colorectal cancer. Her academic background includes a BSc in Biomedical Sciences at QMUL and an MSc at Imperial College in Reproductive and Developmental Biology. Ioanna elected to take time out of training to undertake a PhD at St Mark’s Institute and Imperial College, under the supervision of Mr Ian Jenkins and Professor Stella Knight, as part of the BiCyCLE research group.

Marita Georgiou

Secretary

I am a ST4 in East of England deanery. I completed my Primary medical education in Czech Republic. I have completed my foundation year and core surgical training in the North West deanery. Throughout my training I have undertaken multiple leadership roles in a local level, organizing teaching courses, projects and leading mentoring groups supporting the junior doctor’s mental wellbeing. In addition, I have a regional role as a Journal Club coordinator within the STEER committee (Surgical Trainees in East of England Research). I have a strong academic interest. I have participated in various audits/Quality improvement projects, the result of most of these have also been disseminated as publications/presentations/posters nationally and internationally. The experience obtained from my participation in research projects and publications propelled me in obtaining the role of NIHR accredited associate PI in the ROSSINI project, as well as further participation to more randomized controlled trials.

Susanna Green

Abdominal Wall rep


I am a Leeds graduate, LTFT ST7 Colorectal trainee and mummy. I completed my core and higher training in the North West and Yorkshire deaneries and I have a special interest in abdominal wall reconstruction. I very much enjoy teaching, have recently been part of faculty for regional small bites closure courses, and the Leeds Cadsim cadaveric AWR course, and hope to continue to encourage interest from trainees in the importance of incisional hernia prevention. I hope to generate enthusiasm and engagement from Dukes Club members in the evidence based changes to abdominal wall closure, and also facilitate further learning about AWR techniques.

Jason Rai

Advanced cancer & peritoneal malignancy rep

Jason is currently out of programme for research after completing ST6 at the Thames Valley Deanery. He is undertaking PhD investigating the role of artificial intelligence and radiomics applied to colorectal cancer at St Mark’s Hospital and Imperial College London. He is part of the BiCyCLE research group under the supervision of Mr Ian Jenkins. He was awarded Masters in Medical Education from the University of Warwick. Previously he was a trainee committee member at regional level in the Liverpool Medical Institute.

Hannah Javanmard-Emamghissi

Emergency general surgery rep

Hannah is an ST5 in the East Midlands, returning to training having finished a 3 year research fellowship with the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit. Her PhD work focussed on emergency laparotomies in extreme-risk populations. Her interests include collaborative research and quality improvement in emergency general surgery.

Taner Shakir

Robotics rep

Taner is an ST6 currently OOP at UCL; his research involves improving robotics training with digital adjuncts. His core and higher surgery deanery has been the East of England, where he is also the Dukes Club regional representative. He is passionate about training, having led and delivered multiple trainee focussed robotics courses.

Orestis Argyriou

IBD & intestinal failure rep

 

I am an ST7 in the North-West London Deanery, and have recently come out of training, to undertake my research, leading to a PhD, in IBD and Pouch Surgery, at St Mark’s Hospital. Prior to that, I completed my CST in the North-West Deanery (Mersey), as well as an MSc in Medical Education with the University of Liverpool. I have been the North-West London regional Dukes rep for the past 2 years, and have participated in the organisation of various local events, as well as the delivery of a course for medical students at Imperial College London.

Helena Waggett

The Proctology rep

Helena graduated from UCL in 2015 and moved to the Mersey deanery for her foundation training. While working in Mersey she decided to peruse a career in general surgery and developed an interest in medical education. Helena is currently working at ST6 level in the Severn deanery with a specialist interest in proctology and early rectal cancer. She intends to use this year on the Duke’s Club Executive Committee to provide educational content for members. She has a keen interest in teaching and improving patient care.

I am a General Surgery-themed ST3 in London. I graduated from King’s College London, where I also completed a BSc in Medical Genetics. I am interested in improving patient outcomes and surgical education through the use of digital surgery. I am also involved in organising the Portsmouth Colorectal Congress, which focuses on robotics and other advances in colorectal surgery.

The Pelvic Floor Society rep

Emily is an ST5 in the Severn Deanery, currently completing an OOPR at University Hospital of Wales with a sub-specialty interest in pelvic floor. Her MD is focussed on the delivery of pelvic floor training to colorectal trainees in the UK and service evaluation of pelvic floor services in Wales. She is also involved in the delivery of the POLARiS Trial investigating treatment options for low anterior resection syndrome. 

Sophie Williams

Sophie is an ST6 colorectal trainee in South London. She has completed an OOPE in medical and surgical eduction. She has an interest in endoscopy and has recently completed an MD related to endoscopic research and diverticular disease at King’s College Hospital with Amyn Haji. She is passionate about making endoscopy training a priority for trainees across the UK. 

Jonathan Russ

I’m Jonny, I’m an ST5 in the Northern Deanery. I graduated from Newcastle University and then completed foundation and core training up here. I enjoy teaching and training, I completed a year as a teaching fellow in Liverpool and subsequently my PGCert in medical education during core training. I’m also passionate about representing and advocating for trainees, having previously spent time on the BMA junior doctors’ committee for the Northern region.
