Surgical and Medical Management of Hirschsprung Disease

11 July 2018 - 13 July 2018

Hirschsprung is a current problem with many questions, old mythical ideas, and misunderstood new concepts. Many children with Hirschsprung disease suffer the consequences of this misinformation.

Attendees can watch the technical details of the trans-anal pull-through both endorectal or soave, as well as full thickness or Swenson. Attendees will learn to treat postoperative complications and functional problems such as faecal incontinence, constipation and pre and post-pull through colitis.

We will discuss the concepts of intestinal neuronal dysplasia, hypoganglionosis and the histological transition zone. These controversial concepts often produce improper surgical decisions. We will also discuss surgery related to chronic idiopathic constipation.

A supplemental training course, Bowel Management Workshop, will be held Friday, July 13. The conference is sponsored by the Colorectal and Hirschsprung Center for Children and Division of Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences.
